FORT BLISS, Texas -- Don't play James Brown's "This is a man's world" too loudly around retired Army Spc. Michelle Sanchez unless you can take the ribbing back yourself.
Sanchez is competing in the 2019 Army Trials at Fort Bliss Texas in hopes of representing the Army during the 2019 Warrior Games at Tampa, Florida. Making it this time would be icing on the cake as she previously made the team in 2017.
"It would mean the world at 40. Since there are not a lot of (female Soldiers) out here, we have to set the standard and get out (to the Warrior Games). The world needs to know not every G.I. is a Joe."
This G.I. Jane is competing in cycling, field events and archery, with archery being her favorite. Not only because she crushes it but also because it's amusing to her. Since the majority of competitors in her Army Archery competition are male she finds herself injecting what she calls a splash of obnoxious girl.
"I don't like the color pink, in fact I hate the color pink, but I put it on my bow because it pisses off the guys," she laughs with a wink and a smile.
In all seriousness, Sanchez wants to be an example to other females to excel in anything they desire.
"It's important for females to make it so if I can make it and inspire those that are up and coming why not? I am all about the girl power!"
