The Chief of Staff, Army announced July 18, the selection of Maj. Gen. Stephen M. Twitty, deputy chief of staff, G-3/5/7, U.S. Army Forces Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to command the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Twitty, an experienced infantry officer with combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, previously commanded a brigade combat team at Fort Bliss, and had also served as the division's deputy commanding general for operations. He has been the FORSCOM G3/5/7 since July 2013.

The 1st Armored Division - known as "Old Ironsides" was the first armored division of the U.S. Army to see battle in World War II and is currently the U.S. Army's only active component armored division.
