TRZEBIEN, Poland -- Soldiers of Company D, 3rd Combined Arms Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, conducted a combined arms live fire exercise with Polish soldiers of the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade, 11th Armoured Division, Aug. 31-Sep. 1, 2016 in Trzebien, Poland.

The CALFEX served as the culminating event for the D Co. "Dark Knights" during their training rotation in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a U.S. led effort in Eastern Europe that demonstrates U.S. commitment to the collective security of NATO and enduring peace and stability in the region.

"One of the CG's (Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commander of U.S. Army Europe) priorities is to build interoperability and another is to build assurance, and the way to do that is training and working together," said Lt. Col. Johnny Evans, commander of 3-69 AR.

During the CALFEX, Soldiers in M1A2 Abrams tanks and M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles rolled into defensive blocking positions alongside Polish BMP infantry fighting vehicles. The mounted troops provided support by fire for allied dismounts to proceed to their objective.

The mission essential task focus was area security, particularly while executing cordon and search during the CALFEX, Evans explained.

Polish infantrymen provided additional small arms support while the Dark Knight infantry platoon conducted the cordon and search.

To simulate the challenges of a real-life mission, Soldiers also conducted a MEDEVAC using a M113 armored personnel carrier to pull an injured Soldier from the scene.

"It's all about readiness," Evans said. "Readiness has to be applied in everything we do."

As the Dark Knights wrap up training and prepare equipment for the journey home, they are reminded of the hard work they have done and the relationships they have built here in Poland.

"It's been a tremendous privilege and pleasure to represent not just the battalion, the brigade, but more importantly our country," Evans said. "These Soldiers couldn't be more proud of what they have done. They have worked very hard. They have executed and performed above and beyond my expectations. I will be proud to serve with them at any time."
