YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea - The Secretary of Defense approved the deactivation of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea, and it will be replaced by a rotational brigade combat team from the United States.

Headquartered in the Republic of Korea since July 1965, the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division has played an integral role in the defense of the Korean peninsula. The unit trained and worked alongside its South Korean partners to deter aggression. On three occasions, the unit was awarded the ROK Presidential Unit Citation for its substantial contribution to the national security and defense of the ROK.

The deactivation is a part of the Army Force Generation rotational plan to increase theater readiness and maneuver capabilities on the Korean peninsula as well as globally.

These rotations will improve the Army's ability to conduct bilateral military exercises and activities aimed at reinforcing our enduring relationship with our Korean ally, and they do not increase the overall U.S. force strength. Bringing in off-pen units also exposes more U.S. Soldiers to the unique mission and threat in Korea and northeast Asia and enhances the partnership between the two Armies.
