FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas -- Retired Lt. Gen. Guy Swan III, the former commanding general of U.S. Army North and Fort Sam Houston, presents a flag to William Haines, the son of retired Gen. Ralph Haines Jr., at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery Dec. 3. Soldiers from Fort Sam Houston and Fort Hood joined with community members to pay their respects for Haines, who was 98 years old at the time of his death and was the oldest living 4-star general and senior retired officer. Haines served as the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army from 1967 to 1968. He also served as the commanding general of 1st Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas, and as the commanding general of III Corps, also at Fort Hood
