The room, once filled with the sound of children's laughter as they played around pint-sized desks and chairs, suddenly fell to a hush as all eyes and ears focused on the single voice of a Soldier reading stories of wonderment and imagination to the children as part of Read Across Liberty Day, April 9.

Four Soldiers from the 3rd Sustainment Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, volunteered their time to read to students from the First Presbyterian Christian Academy as part of Read Across Liberty Day, a day dedicated to reading education and awareness sponsored by the Liberty Kiwanis Club of Liberty County and the Rotary Club of Hinesville.

"Reading is important no matter what," said Suzanne Swindell, a FPCA kindergarten teacher. "It's important in all vocations; it's good to see (the Soldiers) out doing these things."

The Soldiers who read to the students used the opportunity to show a side of the army that is not always seen.

"I think it's important (the students) see that we do other things besides what's on TV, where they see the guys shooting guns," said Spc. Shafon Griggs, 3rd Sustainment Brigade. "I think it's important that everybody understands that we are more than (just) the shooting."

Students from the school were happy to hear the stories from the Soldiers.

"I like (the stories)," said FPCA kindergartener Alexis Rice. "I really liked it because it was fun."

To celebrate Read Across Liberty Day, Soldiers from 3rd ID also read to students at schools throughout Liberty County.
