Department of the Army has approved the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., concept plan to establish an Army Reserve Deployment Support Command.
The DSC is expected to stand-up in carrier status in late 2007 with full capability in March 2008.
SDDC received the requirement to establish the DSC Oct. 7, 2005 in a memorandum from Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, United States Transportation Command commander. Schwartz defined an objective for the "establishment of a Functional Readiness Command within SDDC to perform training and readiness oversight of all surface mobility forces."
The DSC will be a Command and Control and Technical Training Readiness command, stationed in Birmingham, Ala. The unit will be aligned under the operational control of SDDC and administrative control under the 377th Theater Sustainment Command.
The DSC will consist of 62 officers, six warrant officers and 55 enlisted Soldiers and is part of a larger SDDC transformation effort.
The mission of the DSC will be to command, control and technically supervise SDDC-aligned Army Reserve units performing terminal, rail, and deployment / distribution support missions and functions. The unit will also provide technical training and readiness oversight to all Army units performing terminal, rail, deployment/distribution support, movement control and watercraft missions and functions.
"The DSC will provide the Army with a single organization with the capability to develop concepts, identify enabling processes and technologies, test and experiment options, and institutionalize solutions in the deployment and distribution functional arena," said Col. Lynn Locklear, director of SDDC Training, Readiness and Mobilization Directorate.
