KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Army News Service, Feb. 16, 2010) -- As many as 2,500 Afghans received tents, coats and blankets Tuesday from the 205th Afghan National Army Corps and international forces in Kandahar, in response to the severe weather conditions.
The 205th ANA Corps civil affairs officer requested the support of coalition forces, but led the planning and completion of the project that brought relief to the people of Haji Aziz Kalay near Kandahar Air Field.
Recent storms had caused flooding and damage to the city leaving many local citizens displaced from their homes.
"Our team assisted in the procurement and transportation of materials, but make no mistake - this was an ANA planned and led mission from start to finish," said, Maj. Gavin A. Lawrence, support operations officer of the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.
205th ANA Corps soldiers and international forces delivered 43 eight-man tents and 230 blankets.
"This is a clear example of the ANA's ability to take the initiative and make a difference to help the Afghan people," said Lawrence.
