Friends, families, and co-workers enjoyed the beautiful late summer weather and the esprit de corps at the annual Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region/U.S. Army Military District of Washington Organizational Day picnic at Fort Lesley J. McNair, D.C., August 10, 2018.
There was a full day of competitive games, children's activities, music, and a catered picnic lunch hosted by Maj. Gen. Michael L. Howard, JFHQ-NCR/MDW commanding general.
"I thought Org Day was amazing, everyone had fun and came to play," said Spc. Darrell Lipscomb, Religious Affairs Specialist, JFHQ-NCR/MDW Command Chaplains Office. "My favorite part about Org Day was playing volleyball, being able to work with the command group and having the Air Force there to play with us was extremely fun."
The competitive events consisted of basketball, horseshoes and volleyball. There were also static displays from the U.S. Army Aviation Brigade, the Fort Myer Fire Department and the JFHQ-NCR/MDW J3, who showed off the MDW Mobile Command Platform.
Making a special appearance at the picnic were members of Vader's 501st, Old Line Garrison, a group of Star Wars costume enthusiasts, the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" Downrange, the Nats mobile and the USO mobile.
There was also a special K9 demonstration by the 289th military police detachment and the special reaction team.
"The J4 and the command organizational day committee worked hard to plan a great event, and it showed. It wasn't just 'let's do what we did last year'," said Sgt. 1st Class Anwar Burgess, Command Paralegal, JFHQ-NCR/MDW.
A moon bounce, face painting, a rock climbing wall, water slide obstacle course and a water balloon toss were among the activities for some of the younger members of the JFHQ-NCR/MDW family.
"I believe events like Org Day are very important because it increases the morale of the unit and as a chaplain's assistant, that's all I truly care about is everyone around me," said Lipscomb. "So knowing they all had fun and were allowed to join in on some friendly competition is my reasoning for the importance of Org Day."
The coveted Commander's Cup was up for grabs with the MDW Staff Judge Advocate bringing home the trophy after some intense competition.
"I appreciate the effort from all of the OSJA team - from Fort McNair and our Fort Myer office, and from our U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers performing annual training with us this month," said Burgess. "People came to play hard in the tournaments, they just didn't show up. It was good competition all around."
