WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The 10th Mountain Division (LI) command group conducted a promotion ceremony Saturday at West Point for an officer who is departing the division and heading to Afghanistan later this month.

Maj. Gen. Kenneth R. Dahl was promoted from brigadier general during a ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where friends and Family from all across the country gathered to show their support.

"I wanted to have my promotion at West Point so that all of my Family and friends who have showed their support over my whole career could make it," Dahl said. "I'm also glad my daughters could make it here to do the pinning."

Dahl's daughters, Allie and Madeline, placed the new two-star rank on their father's shoulders during the event.

After the pinning of the new major general, the official party uncased the general's new two-star flag. Dahl then took the center of the room and spoke.

"I'm going to do the very best job I can do. I'm going to do it for you and for the people you live with," Dahl said, as he addressed the crowd. "I am proud of what I do and who I do it with."

Serving as the officiating officer was Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley, Fort Drum and 10th Mountain Division (LI). He spoke about Dahl's impact on the division and Fort Drum.

"K.D. has had a momentous impact on how things are conducted at Fort Drum," Milley said. "He prepared the division for deployment and then brought them all back home."

Dahl will move on to his next duty station in Afghanistan later this month as deputy commanding general for support to Lt. Gen. James L. Terry, commander of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command and deputy commander of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan.
