HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. - After 55 years of housing Soldiers, the last of three Pinwheel Barracks is finally coming down on Hunter Army Airfield.
In place of the historic barracks, the Savannah District of the Army Corps of Engineers will build six, 72-man barrack complexes on Horace Emmet Wilson Blvd. for 3rd Combat Aviation Soldiers, according to Calvin Shipman, Hunter's project manager for the new construction. Construction of four of the barracks is scheduled to begin in Fiscal Year 2013 at a cost of $11.5 million; construction of the other two is scheduled to begin in Fiscal Year 2014 at a cost of $5.9 million.
"The new barracks will meet the Army Standard for our Soldiers, and will allow us to have a facility which will serve us for the next few decades with better living conditions," said Lt. Col. Jose Aguilar, Hunter Army Airfield garrison commander. "The new barracks will be more efficient with less maintenance operating costs."
The Army has refurbished the buildings since the 1950s to keep them to a standard worthy of housing Soldiers until a few years ago, when Soldiers were permanently displaced from the Pinwheel Barracks because of mold, mildew and missing tiles.
Across the street, two new 72-man barracks complexes are currently being built for 3rd CAB Soldiers by the Savannah District Corps of Engineers.
A third 48-man barracks complex, without a unit designation at this time, is also under construction.
It is located in the 300 block of Billy Mitchell Blvd. beside the 260th Quartermaster Battalion. The three barracks, valued at $20 million, are scheduled to be completed in August 2010.
Along with new barracks in FY-13, the 3rd CAB will get a new dining facility, three company operations facilities, two vehicle maintenance shops, and an aircraft maintenance hangar.
Lieutenant Colonel Aguilar is pleased with the additional facilities coming to Hunter.
"We thank our country for providing the resources to take care our Soldiers," he said.
