KABUL, Afghanistan (Army News Service, Oct. 3, 2006) - The ninth class of Afghan National Army noncommissioned officers graduated the Drill Sergeant Training Course at the Kabul Military Training Center recently.
"This is the best course at the KMTC," said Sgt. Sayed Sarwar, a distinguished honor graduate who emphasized that the course develops soldiers physically, spiritually and mentally.
Sarwar also said the course raises students' morale, which in turn raises the morale of all ANA soldiers and NCOs.
As drill sergeants, the graduates are responsible for training all soldiers who join the ANA. As the number of ANA soldiers and NCOs rises with each recruiting class, so does the need for experts in training.
According to one graduate, Sgt. Abdul Basir, building the relationship between soldiers and NCOs was a principal focus of the drill sergeant course.
"This course taught the responsibilities and authorities of NCOs, and how they should behave toward soldiers," Basir said.
The importance of physical conditioning was also stressed throughout the course, as NCOs were taught to understand physical toughness increases mental toughness. Both are required to lead soldiers in combat.
At the ceremony's end, the new ANA drill sergeants donned the drill sergeant hat and vowed their allegiance to Afghanistan and the Afghan people.
