Fort Stewart, Ga.,- Troopers with 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division fire their newly assigned M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles at Fort Stewart, Ga. March 21.
This is the first time live rounds have been fired since the U.S. Army announced that 3rd ID's Spartan Brigade would convert from an infantry to an armored brigade combat team.
"The units are using gunnery tables to test their vehicles during the fielding process," said Sgt. 1st Class James Barboa, cavalry scout platoon sergeant with 6-8 Cav. "Table VI Gunnery will be the last requirement to complete the fielding process. That gunnery will be done by the end of the month."
Table six is a live gunnery table that certifies each combat vehicle crew. Crew certification is a critical milestone that the three-person team must hit in order to progress onto larger and more complex gunnery tables.
Prior to firing live rounds down range, crews had to conduct hands-on and simulated modules of gunnery skills.
"The simulated exercises allowed our gunners to work on target acquisition," said Capt. Bryce East, commander of C Troop, 6-8 Cav. "The hands-on training included loading and downloading ammunition, identifying different vehicles and ammo types, and disassembling a 25 MM caliber cannon."
Barboa stated that his Troopers were anxious to begin gunnery and experience the adrenaline that comes from firing the main gun.
"We are going to set the bar high for the rest of the units going through gunnery," said East. "All that come after us, will know what to expect."
East said they will continue to make strides towards becoming the most lethal and fit ABCT in the Army and that this is just the beginning.
