FORT DRUM, N.Y. (June 11, 2015) -- Troopers assigned to 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment "Wolverines," 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI), gathered for their unit history plaque re-dedication ceremony held Friday at Thompson Park Zoo in Watertown.
"The event is an opportunity for all of 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment troopers and their Families to visit the zoo and be recognized for the work they have done historically to maintain the zoo and assist with special projects," explained Matthew Holdgate, Thompson Park Zoo executive director.
The ceremony marked nearly five years of volunteer service and signified the unit's relationship with the zoo and the greater Watertown area.
"For almost five years we've had a partnership with the zoo," said Lt. Col. Larry Geddings, 1-89 Cavalry commander. "We have rekindled our partnership this year by unveiling the new sign."
Geddings noted that he and his troopers also volunteer to clean up the zoo and surrounding areas, and this ceremony helped strengthen the bonds with their North Country neighbors.
"For both me and my troopers, this is an opportunity for us to connect with the zoo and the community of Watertown," Geddings said. "Many times, people remember things that they have done or places they have been, but every trooper in the squadron now has a firm tie to Watertown and the zoo."
