FORT HOOD, Texas--Soldiers with 3rd Cavalry Regiment kick off Brave Rifles Week with a golf scramble at Courses of Clear Creek here on Fort Hood, May 11.

Over 50 Soldiers participated in the golf scramble and none of them let a little drizzle of rain dampen their mood as they made their way around the course.

One of the Soldiers who made his way around the course was Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher Gunn, Command Sergeant Major of 2nd Squadron, 3rd Cav. Regt., who said today's event was a chance for Soldiers to take a break.

"It's just a way for Soldiers to relax, spend some time together and do something fun for a change," said Gunn.

Returning from various deployments such as Egypt, Cuba, and Afghanistan, Gunn said it's a good time to build esprit de corps among the Troopers since the regiment Soldiers were all home.

The Brave Rifles Week provides a unique opportunity to celebrate 169 years of regimental history and adding to that uniqueness was the different challenges located at some of the holes.

The challenges along the holes included answering questions about the regiment or questions about certain movies such as 'Happy Gilmore'. Some of the holes even had Soldiers teeing off while wearing a horse head or even using 'Thor's hammer' to putt.

Sgt. Ahmad Saker, an infantryman with 3rd Squadron, 3rd Cav. Reg., talked about his most memorable shot of the day and said, "on one of the holes you had to putt using a ping pong ball. I hit [the ball] from a couple of yards out and made it, so I'm pretty happy about that."

Saker also added that he enjoyed spending the day playing golf with the guys and breaking away from the everyday routine.

As the first day of the Brave Rifles Week concluded and golfers made their final swings, Gunn said he was pretty confident that his squadron was going to win the weeklong competition and said, "I have no doubt that we are going to win."
