FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Pollen dust is collecting on vehicles and structures throughout the installation, signifying new growth. As this occurs, Directorate of Public Works asks Soldiers and civilians to help remove old growth during a postwide spring cleanup campaign April 13-15.

Biannually - once in spring and in fall - the post undergoes an organized cleanup effort, according to DPW Sgt Maj. Lavon Christen.

"It's for the whole garrison to just improve. We're coming off the winter, and the days are longer and warmer. It's time to get rid of the clutter and start fresh for the spring and summer," said Willie Rucker, DPW construction representative.

For the second consecutive time, the cleanup effort lasts three days instead of a week. Rucker said efforts to beautify the post were so embraced in past years that the projects were completed in less than a week, causing the change.

Cleanup begins Tuesday with a focus on buildings' interiors and continues Wednesday with exteriors' work. April 15 is used as an overflow day to take care of any remaining tasks not completed, Christen said.

Christen, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence Command Sgt. Maj. Tod Glidewell and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Dwaine Walters conduct installation-wide inspections April 15, as well.

During the beautification process, if any unit or department has large items that must be disposed, a team of workers is on standby. To make appointments for pickup, call 255-0020.

If hazardous material must be removed, units should contact the Hazardous Material Control Center at 598-1131 or the post environmental office at 255-2541, Christen said.

In order to handle the extra papers, trash, leaves and other materials, DPW staff is installing dumpsters near the Technical Library, in the Bldg. 8950 parking lot and one near the barracks at Bldg. 8350, Christen said. Teams are on standby to ensure dumpsters do not overflow.
