FORT HOOD, Texas (ASBP, August 10, 2009) - Sergeant Michael White, of Baltimore, MD will soon be home. The Fort Hood Soldier is leaving service and will be using his Post-911 GI Bill to attend college in the fall. Since he was a Veteran, he received preferential placement in school and will study electrical engineering.
Before he becomes a student as well as a Veteran, he made one last stop at the Robertson Blood Center on Fort Hood. He donated a unit of blood to the Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) on his last day in service.
"I've tried to do it every chance I got," said the soon-to-be former Soldier. "I started at Fort Huachuca and looked for the military blood program donor center here. I am glad to hear from my unit that they've got the blood supplies they need. I've had friends get hurt and it is good to know someone is out there supporting them."
The Army declared 2009 the "Year of the Non-commissioned Officer." Senior non-commissioned officers of each service have expressed their support of the military blood program by talking with their troops in a new public service announcement. By his service and by making an individual donation on his last day in the Army, Michael White exemplifies the NCO creed, and may soon have a family connection to the deployed troopers as well. "My little nephews might go in and I want to make sure we take care of them."
And because of donors like White, the ASBP is able to collect donations and deliver blood to battlefields and areas of operations all around the world.
