FORT BENNING, Ga., (Sept. 14, 2016) -- The Fort Benning Doughboys kicked off their first game of the season against the Texas Agriculture and Technology Drillers at Doughboy Stadium Sept. 10.

According to Thomas Charles Threatt, 5th Squadron, 15th Cavalry Regiment, offensive head coach for the Fort Benning Doughboys, the team has been working on strengthening team cohesion over the past few months.

"We've been focusing on group exercises," he said. "We've been focusing on the base offense and base defense to make sure we're ready for this season.

"We've only had about 12 practices compared to other teams who have been practicing in the spring and summer months," said Threatt. "We just try to wrap up as much as we can and fill in as much as we can. After the first game, win or lose, everyone understands how things work."

The game started off close, with Texas A&T scoring six points to the Doughboys' zero by halftime. The game concluded with Texas scoring 25 points over the Doughboys' six points.

"I think our biggest strength was power. Being strong mentally and physically," said Threatt. "We hit hard, we're just not as fast as college athletes. A lot of these kids are 18, 19, 20 years old and we're 26, 27 and 30 years old. We're not as quick as we used to be. They exploited that on us, but we were still able to run the ball up and down the field. We just got in trouble when we tried to use some speed that we thought we had."

Jonathan Logan, 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, and member of the Fort Benning Doughboys, stated that unity was the team's biggest strength in the game against the Drillers.

"We are the biggest fraternity in the entire world, the Army," Logan stated. "We've got a brotherhood here. Us being able to fight together, shoulder to shoulder, that's the best thing we have here."

"In terms of weaknesses, we don't get as much practices as some other guys," said Logan. "For us, Army comes first. So we don't always have a full team here, but we come together and make it work."

The Doughboy's next game will be against the Point University Skyhawks at Doughboy Stadium Sept. 18.
