FORT BENNING, Ga. - Senior leaders from around the Army will gather here early next month for the 2011 Maneuver Center of Excellence Reconnaissance Summit.
The conference makes its Fort Benning debut April 6-8 at Harmony Church, the Armor School's new home. It had been staged annually under the old Armor Center at Fort Knox, Ky. This year's theme is "Enabling Operational Adaptability through Reconnaissance."
The opening day is devoted to vendors, who will display the latest reconnaissance and surveillance technologies. The public is invited to view static exhibits including an M3A3 Cavalry Fighting Vehicle, M1127 Stryker Reconnaissance Vehicle and M1151 Up-Armored Humvee.
"There are reconnaissance organizations in every type of maneuver unit out there," said Capt. Christian Reese of the Armor School management staff. "The vendor and static displays give participants an idea of what the different units are currently equipped with."
Up to 200 registered attendees are expected at the summit's final two days, when reconnaissance capabilities discussions will be aimed at defining a strategy for the future.
Top military and civilian Army leaders will deliver presentations that provide a launching point for smaller breakout sessions, Reese said.
He said officials plan to examine current modular brigade combat team and battlefield surveillance brigade reconnaissance capacity in an operational environment characterized by hybrid threats. Virtual Battle Space 2 will allow participants to visualize the Army operating concept within the framework of today's BCT and BFSB reconnaissance organizations.
"This interactive application of future concepts in a representative operational environment will facilitate meaningful and relevant work group discussion," he said.
Several social events are on tap throughout the three-day Reconnaissance Summit. The Maneuver Center will host a Reconnaissance Summit Icebreaker at the National Infantry Museum April 6. A dinner will be held April 7 in the Benning Conference Center's Regimental Room. In addition, the Armor and Cavalry Association is conducting a breakfast meeting April 8. On-site registration will be available April 6 at Patton Hall, Building 5145, in Harmony Church.
Later this year, meanwhile, the Maneuver Conference will replace the Armor and Infantry warfighting conferences - previously organized by Fort Knox and Fort Benning, respectively, Reese said. It's set to take place in September at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center.
