FORT RUCKER, Ala. -- Intramural softball may be winding down, but that does not mean there isn't sports action happening on post.

Intramural bowling teams compete Tuesday nights at Rucker Lanes and teams can still get in on the action, Suzy Kelly, Rucker Lanes business manager, said.

The deadline to register is July 13 and teams have an option to try and make up missed weeks or take zeroes for the time, she added.

Four-person teams play now until Aug. 24, when the season closes with a party at Rucker Lanes. The party is paid for by the $5 per-person team fees. Participants still have to pay $1.75 for shoe rentals if they don't have their own, she said. For more information, call 255-9503.

Parents looking for activities their children can do during the summer and throughout the year should see what the Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills program has to offer, Shelia Shepard, instructional program specialist, said.

SKIES offers a variety of courses for children of various ages including tae kwon do, tennis, swimming and gymnastics, she added. The programs are for children ages 18 months to 18 years.

"Extracurricular activities help children in more ways than one," Shepard said. "It helps build self confidence and helps with school activities. To me, the best way to keep children out of trouble is to give them something to do."

Children can still sign up for classes, which start Aug. 2. Fees for the classes vary.

Parents wishing to sign their children up for any SKIES activities can register at Bldg. 5700, Rm. 130. For more information, call 255-1867.

Golf enthusiasts can see intramural golf teams playing every Tuesday and Thursday until September at Silver Wings Golf Course, said David Unsicker, Silver Wings business manager. Teams are made up of Soldiers and civilians.

Tuesday night teams play by individual stroke rules, while Thursday night teams use a scramble format, he said. Both are considered team sports, but the Tuesday night group count individual scores while the Thursday teams count the team's top score.

"The current season runs until September and we're not signing any more teams up right now, but we will talk to those interested in signing up for next year," he said.

No tournament is currently scheduled for the top teams at the end of this season, Unsicker said.

"We want to have some sort of match-up, but we're not sure how it will work yet," he said. "The teams want to have a big finale' at the end. We a have fun, nine-hole day at the end of the season."

Individuals wishing to participate in team play pay a one-time $10 fee that goes into the season-closing party and then $5 for each game to cover greens fees and cart rentals, Unsicker added.
