VILSECK, Germany -- The U.S. Army's Combat Readiness Center conducted an assistance visit to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, headquartered here, Dec. 8-12, 2014.

This visit was a first of its kind for the Combat Readiness Center, based at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and U.S. Army Europe. The assistance visits are part of a new proactive accident prevention and reduction tool the Army is rolling out.

The 2nd Cavalry Regiment was the first unit to receive a look by the six-member team. The team out briefed Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commander, U.S. Army Europe; Brig. Gen. Markus Laubenthal, chief of staff, U.S. Army Europe; and Col. John Meyer, commander, 2nd Cavalry Regiment; on their observations, citing the outstanding safety culture within the unit as noteworthy.

Although minor changes were recommended in some areas, the overall consensus was that the 2nd Cavalry Regiment has an outstanding safety program. The team noted that the unit's pre-accident plan was a best practice and one of the few noted in ground units across the Army.
