OKINAWA, Japan (Sept. 21, 2013) -- Rain could not dampen the spirits of the more than 240 people that turned out for the deployed Spouse Luau on Torii Station on Sept. 21, 2013. Storms in the area forced organizers to move the event from Torii Beach to Havana's, but those in attendance still had a great time as they enjoyed a variety of food, entertainment and children's activities.
The luau was open to all branches of the military and hosted by Army Community Service on Torii Station and the Airman and Family Readiness Center on Kadena Air Base.
The evening's entertainment featured a series of colorful hula performances from the local group Hui Nohona Aloha.
Distinguished visitors included Brig. Gen. James Hecker, Commander of the 18th Wing at Kadena Air Base, and LTC Eric A. Martinez, Commander of U.S. Army Garrison Torii Station.
The luau is part of a series of deployed spouse dinners that are hosted by a different Service organization each month. The events are normally held on the third Saturday of the month and are open to all spouses and children of deployed or TDY Service members.
Organizers provide free dinner, onsite childcare, prize giveaways and information display tables from organizations such as United Service Organization (USO), Families Overcoming Under Stress (FOCUS), the American Red Cross and the Airman and Family Readiness Center.
