U.S. Army Europe - Building Partnerships and Alliances
What is it'
Headquartered in Germany, U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR) is U.S. European Command's Army Service Component Command and the U.S. military's leading element that builds partnerships and alliances with our European and Eurasian partners. With its four brigade combat teams, corps headquarters and nearly 42,000 Soldiers assigned, USAREUR provides full-spectrum capable forces to carry out or support U.S. and NATO missions anywhere. While stationed across six enduring communities in Germany and Italy, these forward-stationed units provide unique opportunities to continually and meaningfully engage with and build partnership capacity with our European allies; USAREUR's Joint Multinational Training Command (JMTC) has world-class facilities and trainers providing U.S. and allied partners the best, most realistic training possible.
What has the Army done'
Since 2003, USAREUR has and continues to deploy between 25 and 40 percent of its assigned forces supporting operations in Iraq and Afghanistan; USAREUR helped train 35 European nations that currently provide more than 85 percent of all the coalition forces currently serving in Afghanistan - approximately 34,000; USAREUR provides key personnel for the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan Joint Command (IJC) headquarters including the training to prepare them for the mission.
What efforts does the Army have planned for the future'
USAREUR Soldiers took part in more than 200 multi-national theater security cooperation events in 43 countries in 2009 with nearly the same number planned for 2010. USAREUR continues to execute enhanced U.S. and allied training preparing our own troops and our coalition partners for deployments; USAREUR also supports U.S. Army Africa exercises, operations and logistics and stands-by to provide a deployable headquarters for contingencies and crisis response. The JMTC trained more than 40 Observer Mentor Liaison Teams (OMLT) in 2009 and is scheduled to train 60 more teams this year. USAREUR supports its Soldiers, families, retirees and Soldiers deployed to operations in Iraq and Afghanistan with a world-class medical center in Landstuhl, Germany.
Why is this important to the Army'
USAREUR Soldiers are combat multipliers. USAREUR Soldiers are the means by which the U.S. has a constant and meaningful engagement with our European and Eurasian partners. It's USAREUR Soldiers who build the partnerships and alliances and improve the collective capabilities and performance of our forces and our partner nations' forces across USAREUR's 51-country area of operations. It's USAREUR Soldiers who help continue to reassure our European allies of U.S. support to NATO obligations and contingencies. It's USAREUR Soldiers who help influence, encourage and prepare our European partners to support and engage in on-going contingencies.
