FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Coupon clippers have long extolled the advantages of saving money at the cash register. Well, with one swipe of the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Perks card, discounts abound for Soldiers, Families and authorized users.

The FMWR discount card program kicked off Thursday, said Pam Thomas, chief of Support Division/fund administrator, FMWR. The cost of the discount card depends on rank or longevity of Department of Defense employment.

It ranges from $25 for three months for Soldiers ranked specialist and below to $180 for 12 months for sergeant major or command sergeant major, chief warrant officer 5, O6 and above, distinguished civilian and DoD civilian GS11 equivalent or higher.

"You can save more money in a year's cost than the card would cost," Thomas said. "It saves you money."

The card was the brainchild of Lori Bruschi, FMWR marketing director, said Thomas. It is designed for customers to get VIP perks and privileges.

"Loyal customers who buy into the program are rewarded and can receive discounts at FMWR facilities around Fort Bragg every day," Bruschi said.

Some of those discounts include: Buy one get one free game, Monday to Friday until 4 p.m. at bowling centers, excluding private parties. $5 off regular green fee with cart rental at Ryder or Stryker golf courses. Buy one trail ride, get one free, Monday to Friday, excluding parties.

Ten percent off individual smoothies and shakes at Ritz-Epps Physical Fitness Center.

Ten percent off Sunday brunch at Fort Bragg Club. Discounted cover charges at SportsUSA events.

Also, FMWR Perks cardholders will get their own line and check-in stations at special FMWR ticket and product giveaways, Thomas added. Other discounts will be forthcoming and updated on the FMWR Web site at www.fortbraggmwr.com.

Army spouse, Jordan McLerran-Hill said her Family might consider purchasing the card. They live off base, in Raeford, and have begun to attend FMWR events more regularly.

"It seems like it's a really good idea. That means extra money for us to save up," McLerran-Hill said.

Eligible customers can apply for the Perks card at the Fort Bragg Club on Armistead Street, Tickets and Tour in the Mini Mall, Dragon Lanes, next to the Mini Mall and Airborne Lanes on Ardennes Street, or visit the FMWR Web site. Information is also available on FMWR's Facebook page.

The Perks card program is new, but depending on its success, could be expanded.

"We're starting out slow and if it catches on, we'll go big," said Thomas. "Our only purpose in life is the Soldier, the Family and the authorized user. That's why we're here."
