Flea market scratches spring cleaning itch on JBLM

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – The Directorate of Morale, Welfare and Recreation held the annual spring flea market March 20 in the MWR Fest Tent on Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Cancelled last year due to COVID-19, the event returned this year with COVID restrictions and offered service members, civilian employees and their families the opportunity to see what vendors had to offer - including sports equipment, furniture, clothing, beauty products and much more.

“The spring flea market is always a great event, especially for folks who are trying to do some spring cleaning before the big summer moving season and people looking for great local deals,” said Gloria Tomczewski, MWR special events coordinator. “This year we worked closely with the medical professionals at Madigan Army Medical Center to ensure the health and safety of all of our guests.”

With masks donned and pocket books at the ready, more than 300 buyers attended the event - finding treasures big and small.

“I’ve been coming to the JBLM flea markets for years, and it was surely missed last year,” said Tabitha Clarke, flea market attendee. “It is a great opportunity to find some deals and help out folks who are getting ready to move.”

With the summer permanent change of station season quickly approaching, many service members and civilian employees used the flea market as a chance to sell unwanted items.

“My wife and I are moving back to the East Coast this summer, so we are trying to make our move as light as possible,” said Marcus Sorano, flea market vendor. “It’s a great feeling to pass some of my things to others who will enjoy them. The flea market is a great way to earn some cash, do some spring cleaning and prepare for my move all at the same time.”

The next JBLM MWR flea market is scheduled for spring 2022.
