FORT BENNING, GA. - Sixty armored vehicles arrived Thursday at Ochille Railhead From Fort Knox, Ky. The vehicles were offloaded Tuesday, using more than 60 civilian and military personnel from the Directorate of Training Sustainment, 194th Armored Brigade and the 316th Cavalry Brigade.
The vehicles included six M1A1 and three M1A2 Abrams tanks, 41 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, seven Stryker vehicles and three M88 Recovery Vehicles, said Scott Fountain of the Directorate of Training Sustainment, Plans and Ops. Armor Basic Officer Leader Course Soldiers, 19 Delta Soldiers, one-station unit training classes and others with the Armor School will use the vehicles.
“It’s the same training we’ve done at Knox that we will be doing here,” Fountain said.
The vehicles were unchained here Friday and on Tuesday were driven to their destination at Building 5405 on Harmony Church.
The armored vehicle train shipment is part of the Base Realignment and Closure mandate of bringing the Armor School to Fort Benning after being located at Fort Knox for more than 70 years. The 316th Cavalry Brigade and 194th Armored Brigade uncased their colors at Fort Benning in June. Training at Fort Benning for the Armor School began in January.
The first shipment of armored vehicles arrived in August 2010 and included five M1A2 System Enhancement Package Abrams tanks.
Another shipment arrived June 21 carrying more than 70 armored vehicles, including tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and M88 Recovery Vehicles.
