FORT BRAGG, N.C. (Feb. 4, 2014) -- British Royal Marine Lt. Gen. Gordon K. Messenger, deputy commander of NATO's Allied Land Command based in Izmir, Turkey, visited Fort Bragg, N.C., and the 82nd Airborne Division, Jan. 28, 2014. During his trip, he met with Division leaders, to include Brigadier Giles Hill, the 82nd's deputy commanding general - interoperability, and observed training between the Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team and the Royal Netherlands Army's 11th Airmobile Brigade.

The 1st Brigade Combat Team, or BCT, and 11th Airmobile Brigade, or AMB, paratroopers have been training together for the past month, conducting everything from airborne operations to river crossings to verbal exams testing each soldier's knowledge of his foreign counterpart's unit history.

The culminating exercise of partnership consisted of a joint air assault training exercise, observed by Messenger and 1st BCT and 11th AMB leaders.

"At NATO LANDCOM and across NATO as a whole, one of our principle objectives is to develop interoperability between our nations' forces," Messenger said. "I was delighted to see the efforts made by the 82nd Airborne Division in concert with their Dutch partners to take interoperability seriously and improve the operational capabilities of the alliance."
