FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. (Army News Service, Jan. 30, 2008) - Boxing fans from throughout southern Arizona filled Barnes Field House Friday night to watch the championship bouts of the 2008 All-Army Boxing Championships.

Friday night's nine bouts featured boxers with local connections, knockouts and a women's bout. A combatives demonstration by the 304th Military Intelligence Battalion during the intermission kept the evening's energy level high.

The 2008 All-Army Boxing team selected by the weekend's bouts will compete against the best boxers in the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy Feb. 3-8 at Camp Lejeune, N.C., in the 2008 Armed Forces Boxing Championships.

Army is the reigning Armed Forces boxing team champion. Since 1976, Army has only given that title up twice -- once in 1978 to the Marines and again to the Marines in 1991.

This year's championships were covered by the Military Channel. Three 1-hour segments on the 2008 All-Army Boxing Championships will air on the Military Channel later this summer.

Fort Huachuca will host the All-Army Boxing Championships and the Armed Forces Boxing Championships in 2009.

Fort Huachuca is a center of excellence for military sports and has played host to Army boxing events for 20 years. In addition to regularly hosting the All-Army Boxing Championships and the Armed Forces Boxing Championships, the fort was the site of the 2004 World Military Boxing Championships, where 20 member nations participated, and the 2006 World Military Volleyball Championships, where six countries participated. The Armed Forces cycling team trained here in 2005.
