FORT BRAGG, N.C. (April 30, 2012) With his Tier 2 Senior Executive Service promotion today, Nate Godwin became the third civilian member of U.S. Army Forces Command to hold the position equivalent to a two star general.
As the host of the ceremony held in Marshall Hall, Gen. David M. Rodriguez, the FORSCOM commanding general, said, "I want to thank this truly exceptional public servant, who is a gifted leader and team player, for his exemplary service, his professional example, and his many, many significant contributions to our Army and the nation."
Rodriguez noted that the occasion was not only a special event for Godwin but a tribute to FORSCOM and what it does every day. "By elevating the position, the Department of the Army validates the important work we do," he said. FORSCOM's mission is to prepare conventional forces to provide a sustained flow of trained and ready land power to combatant commanders in defense of the nation at home and abroad.
Godwin serves as the assistant deputy chief of staff for FORSCOM G-3/5/7 directorate (plans, operations, training), the same position in which he had been as a Tier 1 SES. His span of responsibilities includes collective and joint training, deployments, readiness, aviation, programs, force integration, combat development, force management, and force structure.
After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy, Godwin spent 25 years as an active duty Army officer in a wide range of command and training staff assignments.
Highlights of his career in uniform include service as the chief of operations advisor in El Salvador in the early 1990s. The culmination of his time there was the victorious end of the war in El Salvador and the signing of the peace accords.
Godwin also served as chief of tactics in the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Ga.
"The higher up you go, the top may shrink but the bottom expands infinitely," Godwin observed during his Tier 2 SES promotion. "The more you are selected to be a leader, the more you are expected to serve."
