OBERHAMBACH, Germany -- Soldiers of Alpha Company, Warrior Transition Battalion -Europe took part in a Project Odyssey January 24-26, at the Hambactal Activity Center and Resort.

The 3-day event allowed the Soldiers to participate in various activities including rock climbing, fishing, archery, and golfing.

"It's a way to get Soldiers out of their rooms and outside in a group setting, where they realize they are not alone," said Nancy Schiliro a Project Odyssey staff member.

Project Odyssey's name is derived from Homer's epic poem about overcoming adversity and finding the way home, according to the organization's official website. It is an outdoor, rehabilitative retreat that encourages a connection with nature, their peers, and is designed to help Soldiers deal with the affects of combat stress.

"Injuries are not just 'I have lost and arm or a leg.' It's more than that. There are injuries you can't see that we deal with on a daily basis," said Sgt. Ruben Bustos of A. Co. WTB-E. "This project takes you away from the stressors and puts you in the position of a caregiver through the team building exercises."

Project Odyssey is completely sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project, which is a non-profit organization run by Veterans and funded completely by donations. Any Soldier or veteran can participate in Project Odyssey. For more information on Project Odyssey and how to apply, please contact them at: projectodyssey@woundedwarriorproject.org.
