VILSECK, Germany -- An American flag covers an original steel girder from one of the World Trade Center towers that arrived on Rose Barracks, Sept. 3. The New York Fire Department donated the girder to the Friends of German-American Firefighters, an organization in Oberviechtach, a town approximately 40 miles southeast of Grafenwoehr.

Soldiers from the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment officially presented the artifact to their Bundeswehr partners from the Panzergrenadierbataillon 122, based in Oberviechtach, Sept. 11.

The handover of the original steel girder stands as a symbol of friendship and solidarity between the people and armies of the United States and Germany, and is the only original artifact from the World Trade Center in Germany.

The community intends to incorporate the girder into a Sept. 11 memorial in Oberviechtach.
