Name: Capt. William F. Shanahan, commander, 100th Missile Defense Brigade Headquarters Battery, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Hometown: Aurora, Colo.

Joined the Army: August 1985

Route to commission: Enlisted and attended basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. After 14 years, attended Officer Candidate School.

MOS: 14A - Air defense artillery (previous MOSs include 96B, 13F and 13A)

Education: Master's degree in education (human resource studies)

Marital Status: Married

Children: Five - three boys and two girls

Activities/Hobbies: Travel, reading, riding motorcycle

Favorite movie: Boondock Saints, Matrix

Favorite TV show: Survivor and the Ultimate Fighter

Favorite band: None (I have very eclectic taste in music. If I had to name a few, I might go with Led Zepplin, AC/DC, Kiss, Violent Femmes, Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Charlie Pride, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Mozart, and Beethoven)

Favorite thing about the Army: The structure and discipline; Teamwork; Working toward a command goal; Oh, yeah, and the health benefits.

What I've learned being a Soldier: The question is too large, and too vague. I have learned to become better in the things I do, to learn from the people I work with, gaining knowledge from every assignment.

What inspires you to be a Soldier: Knowing that I'm part of an organization that is charged with defending the United States from enemies hell-bent on destroying our way of life.
