ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-Civilian Aides to the Secretary of the Army from Iowa and Illinois visited Rock Island Arsenal Sept. 22.

John Scully, representing Illinois, and J. Daniel McGowan, of Iowa, were honored guests of the Arsenal's senior mission commander, Maj. Gen. Yves J. Fontaine, during their visit.

Scully and McGowan also received briefings from key Arsenal leadership, including RIA Garrison Manager Joe Himsl and Joint Munitions Command Chief of Staff Col. Arnold P. Montgomery.

Civilian Aides are selected by Secretary of the Army John McHugh to generate and maintain support for the Army throughout their state and local communities. CASAs were first formally recognized in 1922 and have since become a vital part of the Army. Among other duties, they promote good relations between the Army and public and advise the Secretary about their regional area.

The aides were given to a historical ride around the Arsenal that included the historic Quarters One, which served as the family home of the highest-ranking officer on the Arsenal and was the second-largest single family residence owned by the federal government, behind only the White House. The pair finished their visit with a tour of the Joint Manufacturing Technology Center.
