ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. — August is Antiterrorism Awareness Month, intended to raise awareness about threats and promote vigilance and reporting of terrorist and violent extremist activities. These actions are critical to successfully provide the advanced warning needed to defend against the full range of threats.
To highlight antiterrorism awareness, the C5ISR campus will implement a series of initiatives aimed at reinforcing campus protection strategies, conduct robust, overt, and highly visible tactics, techniques, and procedures to further detect, deter, and delay hostile adversary planning and movement, and foster interagency teamwork on the installation.
According to Command Antiterrorism Officer Carly Garrett, with the G3/5 Protection Team, during ATAM, the C5ISR campus can expect an increased law enforcement presence, various antiterrorism training sessions, the implementation of Random Antiterrorism Measures, or RAMs, and an active assailant drill.
RAMs are highly visible security measures and will be implemented in C5ISR campus buildings. In the building lobbies, courtyard, and surrounding areas, activities such as bag checks, K-9 Unit patrols, and vehicle inspections will be conducted.
CECOM will also introduce activities that promote community engagement and awareness. For example, campus partner protection teams will host demonstrations, distribute educational materials, and facilitate trainings like “Stop the Bleed.”
Stop the Bleed training educates participants on the importance of wound packing and the proper application of tourniquets in the event of a terrorist attack. Training dates and times, as well as registration instructions, will be announced.
Another initiative in support of ATAM will be active shooter and scenario-based training. The Civilian Active Attack Response Protocol training team will be on-site from August 13 to 14 to present extended active assailant training with expanded drills. While these classes are currently limited to CECOM personnel, participants are encouraged to share what they have learned with their coworkers.

To conclude ATAM, an active assailant drill will be held during the last week of August. This exercise will evaluate the effectiveness of recently updated antiterrorism and emergency action plans, specifically the standardized C5ISR Campus Emergency Action Plan. The drill will assess the workforce’s familiarity with critical protection procedures, including evacuation routes, available barricade materials, the location of first aid kits, and other essential emergency equipment and workforce response, as well as test emergency procedures.
Garrett emphasized the need for participation from the workforce.
“These efforts are not only about compliance but about fostering a culture of readiness and resilience,” she said.
Garrett said these exercises help to ensure that the C5ISR workforce is prepared to respond efficiently to any potential threat.
