Fort Knox, Ky. – This Black History Month, we recognize the diverse and inspiring stories of our Recruiters. Each of these individuals contribute to the proud legacy of black excellence in our armed forces, embodying strength and commitment to a more inclusive tomorrow.
Sgt. 1st Class Travis Honore, originally from Anchorage, Alaska, currently serves at the USAREC Recruiting and Retention College.
“Black History to me means a moment to pause, reflect and celebrate accomplishments of past and current African Americans,” Honore said.
“Here at the schoolhouse, I let it be known to all students that if they have an issue, they can come directly to me,” Honore said. “I give them my personal number and tell them to call me if they have questions or need advice. I still actively speak with students that have graduated from the course two years ago.”
Honore says that his mother is his role model and helped shape him into the person he is today.
“It’s tough being in recruiting as an African American,” Honore said. “Sometimes, we are the only black person in the office or even in the company. There have been times where I had to prove that I had what it takes to lead as being the only black station commander, but I overcame it.”
