Doug Bush sworn in as Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology

WASHINGTON – The Honorable Douglas R. Bush was sworn in on Feb. 11, 2022 as the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology following his nomination by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., and confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

As ASA(ALT), Mr. Bush will lead the Army acquisition enterprise and will advise the Secretary of the Army on all matters related to acquisition programs and policies. He also serves as the Army acquisition executive, the senior procurement executive, the science advisor to the Secretary of the Army, and the Army’s senior research and development official. Additionally, he appoints, manages and evaluates program executive officers and direct-reporting program managers, and is responsible for managing more than 43,000 professionals within the Army Acquisition Corps and the Army acquisition workforce.

In March 2021, Mr. Bush was appointed by President Biden as the Principal Deputy ASA(ALT) and, in that capacity, was designated as the acting ASA(ALT) until his nomination in September 2021.

Upon confirmation, Bush said, “It is a great honor to lead the dynamic Army acquisition community in meeting its mission to develop, acquire and deliver needed capability to the Army, our Soldiers and the joint force.”

He listed several priorities that will guide his efforts, including:

(1) Placing a laser-like focus on program execution and performance to ensure rapid delivery of improved equipment to Soldiers

(2) Improving and accelerating software acquisition

(3) Focusing on security in acquisition, including cybersecurity and supply chain security

(4) Testing systems realistically to ensure problems are identified and addressed early

(5) Working closely with Congress on Army modernization programs

Mr. Bush was a congressional staff member for almost 19 years, working in a variety of positions in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Most recently, from 2019 to 2021, he served as deputy staff director of the House Armed Services Committee, where he was responsible for committee administration and operations, while also advising Chairman Adam Smith (D-WA) on policy matters. From 2007 to 2018, he served on the HASC as a professional staff member, advising members of the committee on a wide range of acquisition program and policy topics.

Mr. Bush began his career in public service as an armor officer in the U.S. Army, where he served in the 24th Infantry Division and the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia. He holds a B.S. political science (American Politics) from the United States Military Academy at West Point and an M.A. in security studies from Georgetown University.
