PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. — Aisha Mims, a general engineer (software/sustainment) with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Armaments Center at Picatinny Arsenal, will receive the Modern-Day Technology Leader Award during the 2024 Black Engineer of the Year Awards ceremony in February.

The awards honor leaders who demonstrate outstanding performance and who will shape the future of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“I am very excited about the nomination and to receive this award is a great honor,” said Mims. “I hope to be an example to others like myself, who work hard and put their all into their work.”

Mims was nominated for the award by Patricia Alameda, Director of the Armament Software Engineering Center, which is part of the Weapons and Software Engineering Center (WSEC).

Mims’ nomination was endorsed by Chris J. Grassano, Director of the DEVCOM Armaments Center, and Cynthia L. Perazzo, Director, WSEC.

“The efforts of Ms. Mims have significantly contributed to the DEVCOM Armaments Center mission through her leadership on key programs including the fielding of the Lightweight Handheld Mortar Ballistic Computer along with her efforts supporting foreign military sales to our allies,” Grassano wrote.

The nomination notes that Mims managed both programmatic and financial oversight of more than 40 fielded software-intensive weapon systems, with a budget of $500 million, over five years.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Ms. Mims will succeed in whatever path she chooses to take on for her career,” Perazzo wrote. “Aisha consistently looks for ways to utilize resources more efficiently, resulting in always being a good steward of the taxpayer’s funding. Ms. Mims work ethic is a true asset in supporting the Army mission supporting the warfighter.”

DEVCOM had several other award winners who will also be recognized at this year’s conference in Baltimore, Maryland. The U.S. Army Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) Center had three winners: Chad Nash for Outstanding Technical Contribution; Clare Yang, Modern Day-Technology Leader; and Dax Cadet, Science Spectrum Trailblazer. Also, Tony Harris of the DEVCOM Analysis Center was recognized for Community Service in Government.

In recent years, employees at the Armaments Center’s WSEC organization have also been honored with the Black Engineer of the Year awards. They are Tyrone Hutchinson, Hannibal People and Jean-Philippe Simon, who work at Picatinny Arsenal; and Curtis Bradley, who works at Watervliet Arsenal, New York.

Last year, Kushan G. Patel received an award in the category of Science Spectrum Trailblazer, while Hampton Terry received an award in the category of Modern-Day Technology Leader.
