SEOUL, Republic of Korea -- Ulchi Freedom Guardian, the world's largest annual computerized command and control exercise, is being conducted Aug. 17 - 28 by Republic of Korea and United States military forces.
The combined and joint exercise allows Combined Forces Command, United States Forces Korea, 8th U.S. Army and other service components to practice defending the Republic of Korea.
Since last year's exercise, the Republic of Korea has exercised operational control during UFG - moving from a "supporting" to "supported" role.
"Ulchi Freedom Guardian 2009 is a demanding training exercise that presents a great opportunity for our warfighting team to exercise and evaluate our mission-essential tasks and improve our warfighting capabilities," said Gen. Walter L. Sharp, commander of United Nations Command, ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea.
