Col. Craig Martin, Fort Hamilton Garrison Commander, and Mr. Charles Walker, Deputy to the Garrison Commander, visits local Junior Reserve Officer's Training cadets at Fort Hamilton High School, N.Y., Nov. 22, 2021. The leadership team engaged with approximately 120 JROTC students to connect and acknowledge their efforts and commitment to excellence during their recent color guard performance for Fort Hamilton’s Retiree Appreciation Day. “It was important to me that we took the time to come see you and say thank you,” Martin said. “The dedication to excellence you displayed was admirable and it meant a lot to our retiree community.” They spoke about leadership, resilience, career exploration, and self-empowerment. “It’s important to grow as an individual of character, be a person of your word, and have a plan for your future - regardless if you choose to serve in the military or not,” said Martin. “We have faith in you. Seek out opportunities, ask questions and always know you are not alone.” Students from all backgrounds engaged asking questions about managing time, stress, and priorities. Walker closed out the two-hour visit by challenging them to do their best. “If anyone says you can’t do something, prove them wrong. It does not matter your background, if you put your mind to it – you will be successful,” Walker said. The dialogue was productive way to allow the two organizations to connect as neighbors and to empower young people.
