HOHENFELS, Germany- On April 15, 2021, U.S. Soldiers, assigned to the 2d Cavalry Regiment, along with French Soldiers, assigned to 92nd Infantry Regiment, executed a Defensive Operation against 1-4 Infantry Regiment's opposing forces, during Dragoon Ready 21, a training exercise aimed at strengthening cohesion and interoperability between U.S. and allied forces.
Tasked with collecting information and providing defense for both elements on the battlefield, both the U.S. and French troops played key roles as they worked together, overcoming challenges to defend against OPFOR.
“There was an attack in the morning by OPFOR, and we were tasked with being the first line of defense while collecting information with the 2d Cavalry Regiment,” said Callot the French Platoon Leader.
“It was a great opportunity to increase the capability and understanding of our multinational allies,” said Capt. Evan Horner, commander of Lightning Troop, 3rd Squadron, 2CR.
The information gathered during their mission and even the short falls in the attack allowed for U.S. and French troops to analyze and define their short comings and quickly correct these missteps.
“Our challenge during the training was finding the breaks in security and the different ways the enemy could infiltrate lines,” said 1st Lt. Maggie Gleason of Lightning Troop, 3rd Squadron, 2CR. “The entire event was based on planning, and it was a good way to see what we did right and what we could do better next time.”
The opportunity to train in Hohenfels was a benefit for both the U.S. and French Soldiers. The troops were able to learn aspects of teamwork, communication, and taking a leadership role during various missions.
“We have learned a lot from each other; the French are very enthusiastic and excited to be here,” Gleason said.
Dragoon Ready 21 is one of the many multinational training exercises held at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center throughout the year. The exercises allow U.S. Soldiers as well as NATO allies and partners to train together and increase interoperability and readiness in Europe.
