Ansbach, Germany -- The USAG Ansbach Environmental Office hosted a project day at Soldiers Lake on Urlas April 30, 2019 in observance of the annual Earth Day. They welcomed about 170 students from 3rd to 5th grade of Ansbach Elementary school and the 1st and 2nd graders of Rusam Elementary School in Sachsen near Ansbach.
The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and educate the children on the importance of Earth's ecosystems. In eight different stations, the students found out about a specific ecosystem, its challenges and problems and worked on potential solutions.
Volunteers, garrison employees and representatives from German environmental offices staffed the stations, which discussed the water cycle and water quality, water insects, the beehives by the Environmental Education Center and the organization and honey production of bees. A shepherd brought sheep to look at and pet, a beaver display explained the beavers' lifestyle and activities at Soldiers Lake, and a forest station showed forest management and the importance of tree protection.
The children were separated in small working groups and rotated through the stations, where the topics were discussed at an age-appropriate level.
