FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- Lt. Gen. Michael D. Lundy, Commander of the Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth and Commandant of the Command and General Staff College, recognized 65 Army University staff members and CGSC faculty members with 75 writing awards acknowledging their professionalism and scholarship during the Golden Pen Awards Ceremony at the Lewis and Clark Center, March 4.
The ceremony recognized faculty members for the written work during academic year 2018. The large number of awardees included seven who received recognition for books or book-length works, and 42 who were recognized for peer-reviewed works. "I appreciate you taking your personal time, and expanding your professional knowledge and skills as a part of writing and being able to share your expertise with the larger Army," said Lundy.
He noted the Large-Scale Combat Operations book set, published by Army University Press last year has become pretty popular. "It's driving the kind of conservations we need to have," he said. Many of the awardees had either edited a book in the set or contributed chapters and articles to the book set.
The Golden Pen Awards Program is run by volunteers from the CGSC faculty who staff committees that recognize authors in three categories. The Gold Pen is awarded for books or book length works. Silver is awarded for a chapter of a book, a peer-reviewed journal article, or a stand-alone monograph that is not part of a degree program. The Bronze Pen is given for a short article, undocumented article, encyclopedia article, book review, op-ed piece or letter to the editor, or a body of work consisting of no more than five publications.
Following the presentation of writing awards, Frank J. Gorski, III, Chief of Mission Command Information Systems with the Army University Directorate of Simulation Education, received the Commanders Award for Civilian Service. He was recognized for initiative and technical expertise in designing and creating a 1:100,000 scale map for use in the Decisive Action Training Environment- Europe as part of the CGSC Advanced Operations Course.
Lundy spoke to faculty members about CAC and Army University initiatives and took questions from the audience following the presentations.
