FORT SILL, Okla. (Feb. 7, 2019) -- Soldiers, families, and civilians can satisfy their cravings for salads, burritos, wraps, and sub sandwiches while maintaining a healthy, "Be Fit lifestyle," thanks to the Army & Air Force Exchange Service's new Chopz restaurant at the 24-hour Sheridan Road Express (at Mow-Way Road).

Fort Sill Garrison Commander Col. Don King Jr. and Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Jonathan Lutgens joined AAFES and Chopz leaders in cutting the ribbon Jan. 30. The store had a soft opening Jan. 23.

Chopz features a variety of better-for-you choices.

Diners have dozens of fewer-than-500-calories options, like the veggie wrap, barbecue pulled pork salad, and "The Bird," a half-sub with turkey, chicken, lettuce, tomato, onion, and garlic ranch sauce. Chopz also serves breakfast, including an acai bowl, burritos, and wraps.

A lot of fresh ingredients are used in the food items, said Charles Sciascia, Orion Food System director of business operation, CONUS military.

"We use fresh vegetables, and lean protein meats, and the choices are very customizable," he said. "The customer is in command when they order."

Chopz features a grab-and-go section at the front counter, and it is open at all times, he said.

The hot grab-and-go features breakfast and lunch items during those hours; and the cold grab-and-go is available 24/7 with subs, wraps, and salads.

"The hot grab-and-go breakfast is very popular," he added.

For snacking, Chopz also features small cinnamon rolls, cookies, and bottled drink items, said Sandra Ramirez, Chopz shift manager.

The first Chopz opened in 2012, at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Sciascia said.

"Fort Sill is now our 42nd location across 20 states (including civilian locations)," he said. "This is our first one on an Army base, and the first one in Oklahoma."

Chopz also offers Impulse smoothies: fruit and protein.

Fort Sill AAFES General Manager Don Walter helped cut the ribbon.

"To stay ready and resilient, it's important that Fort Sill Soldiers and families have healthy eating choices available," Walter said. "The Exchange is fully committed to serving our community by bringing in name-brand restaurants with a wide variety of nutritious options.

Chopz is inside the Sheridan Road Express, Bldg. 3985. It is open Mondays through Fridays, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Breakfast is available during the week until 10:30 a.m.
