Rock Island Arsenal, Ill.-- Gen. Gustave "Gus" Perna, Commanding General, Army Materiel Command, presented the Department of the Army Excellence in Explosives Safety Award to the Joint Munitions Command during his visit to Rock Island Arsenal on March 29.

This annual award recognizes the organization with the most effective overall explosives safety program. JMC and the Safety and Occupational Health team "progressed beyond safety fundamentals by using innovative ways to protect against hazards, which is a testament to the overall commitment to workplace safety," reads the citation from AMC.

According to JMC's Commanding General Brig. Gen. Richard Dix, JMC took the lead in the development of the process safety management guidance for the Department of Defense and Army Materiel Command.

In addition to providing explosives safety support to its own 14 installations where munitions are stored, produced, and demiled, JMC also provides safety matrix support to the Army Sustainment Command. During the award period, the safety team managed 76 Logistics Readiness Centers and 37 Ammunition Supply Points throughout the world.

"The Joint Munitions Command enterprise is honored to receive such a prestigious award from the Department of the Army as recognition of continued efforts in adhering to the cardinal principle of Explosives Safety: Exposing the minimum amount of personnel to the minimum amount of explosives for the minimum amount of time in order to successfully accomplish the mission." said Michael McKinney, safety specialist.
