WIESBADEN, Germany -- U.S. Army Europe and the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense signed a cross-service agreement for a long-term lease of 18 heavy equipment transport systems in a ceremony, here, Aug. 3.

Roderick Malone, head of Operational Support Programs, Defense Equipment and Support, United Kingdom Ministry of Defense; and Col. Edward Burke, U.S. Army Europe's Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4, or logistics, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations.

The lease will partially satisfy a shortfall identified and addressed over the last two years, where current U.S. systems cannot operate within many European nations' weight restrictions.

In January of this year, the U.S. Army's headquarters approved U.S. Army Europe to pursue a lease of the equipment from the UK. The equipment will remain the property of the UK, but be maintained and operated by the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, headquartered in Kaiserslautern, Germany.
