Lynda MacFarland, the spouse of Fort Hood and III Corps Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland, took a left at Loving Lane, a right at Dependable Drive and arrived at Fort Hood's Military Spouse Appreciation Day luncheon, May 8.

Those aren't actual street names on Fort Hood, but table names. They are the qualities that describe the more than 400 military spouses that convened at Club Hood who were treated to a luncheon with dozens of door prizes, a guest speaker and a skit.

"On behalf of my Soldier and your Soldier, thank you," said MacFarland to the military spouses in attendance. "Thank you for sticking with this life."

Being married to a Soldier for more than 30 years, MacFarland could relate to the sacrifices made daily by the military spouse.

"Spouses serve too and we can be proud of that fact," said MacFarland. "Supporting our Soldiers has many components and challenges which we undertake out of our love for them."

The spouses were entertained throughout the luncheon with a guest speaker and a skit called the "Basic Black Dress" that continues to be performed at spouse's groups and posts around the world.

Diane Williams, the Army Volunteer Core Program Manager, helped organize the event and said hosting an event like this one provides great satisfaction for her.

"When you see the smiles on the military spouses face, it's so rewarding," said Williams. "It makes me feel really good to give them a break."

Laughter and smiles could be heard and seen on the spouses throughout the luncheon. One of those spouses, Samantha Reed, said she felt honored to have a day dedicated to them.

"It made me feel super appreciated and happy because I think we are often over looked," said Reed.

Reed also added that she enjoyed the festivities the luncheon offered because it allowed her to get away for a couple of hours.

"I'm a new mom so it made life a little easier and it's close to Mothers Day so it's just a great weekend celebration," said Reed.
