WIESBADEN, Germany -- Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commanding general, Army Europe, bid farewell to Maj. Gen. Walter Piatt, deputy commanding general, Army Europe, in a ceremony, here, March 6.

During the ceremony Piatt praised Army Europe's staff for their hard work and dedication to the mission.

"You have worked tirelessly to accomplish this vision of Strong Europe, (and) it's working," Piatt said. "It's having an effect when you get out throughout the alliance, you can feel it is working."

Piatt moves on to Washington, D.C., to become the Army's director of operations, readiness and mobilization, in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7.

"I speak for the entire Army Europe team when I say we couldn't be happier for Walt and his family and I offer my congratulations on his selection to this challenging and important duty assignment at the Pentagon," said Hodges, after Piatt's next assignment was announced in January.

"Walt is yet another example of one of the tremendous leaders we're cultivating here in the leadership development laboratory that is U.S. Army Europe," Hodges added.

Piatt began his military career as an enlisted Soldier when he entered Army service in 1979 from Somerset, Pennsylvania. He was commissioned as an Army officer in 1987.

During his 35-year career Piatt has served in numerous assignments all over the world including tours in Korea, Panama, Hawaii, and Alaska. He also completed several operational deployments to include Suriname, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Most recently Piatt served as the commander of the 7th Army Joint Multinational Training Center in Grafenwoehr, Germany.

Brig. Gen. William K. Gayler, currently the director, Officer Personnel Management Directorate, U.S. Army Human Resources Command, Fort Knox, Kentucky, will be the next deputy commanding general of Army Europe.
