After last performing more than a decade ago on Fort Huachuca, the circus returns as Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, or FMWR, presents the Carson & Barnes Circus Wednesday.
The family-oriented show takes place at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the Anderson Events Park, located next to Thunder Mountain Activity Centre. Spectators will watch the circus inside Carson & Barnes' "state-of-the-art" tent equipped with a multimillion dollar sound and lighting system.
"We are grateful to have the circus back for entertainment for our military and Families," said James Thomas, FMWR special events coordinator. "[Carson & Barnes] called and asked if we would like to put on the circus for our post and we thought this would be a nice change."
According to Thomas, the event consists of exotic animals for petting besides the animals and events for the circus itself. The circus includes two Asian elephants, juggling acts and "The Flying Cavallinis," a family of trapeze artists from Las Vegas.
Carson & Barnes' 2014 season follows the theme, "This is the Real Circus." In addition to the Cavallinis, the "big top" spectacle features a variety of international acts including "The Dominguez Motorcycle Globe of Death" from Colombia, acrobats from Mexico, a magic act from England and show girls from around the world.
This year's show also highlights a variety of animals besides the elephants. Camels, horses, goats, dogs and a pygmy hippopotamus named Katy are just a few of the circus' four-legged stars.
Carson & Barnes is in its 78th year of operation and tours all 50 states. The circus is under the direction, production and management of three generations of the Miller-Byrd family.
Tickets are now on sale at Murr Community Center and Sierra Vista Ace Hardware, $12 for adults and $6 ages 2 -- 11. At the gate, the cost increases to $16 for adults and $10 for children. Those under 2 will be admitted for free.
