Former AMC Commander passes, leaves legacy of service

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- A former Army Materiel Command leader will be laid to rest Aug. 13 at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.

General (Ret.) John R. Deane died July 18 at the age of 94. Deane served as the AMC Commander from Feb. 12, 1975 until his retirement Jan. 31, 1977. Under Deane's command, AMC was designated as the U.S. Army Development and Readiness Command (DARCOM).

"AMC is saddened to learn of the passing of one of our former leaders," said AMC Commander Gen. Dennis L. Via. "General Deane left a legacy of service and commitment to our Army and the Nation. His contributions to the Materiel Enterprise were enduring and will be long-remembered."

Prior to serving as the 4th AMC Commander, Deane served in the role of Deputy Chief of Staff for Research, Development and Acquisitions for the Army.
