FORT BRAGG, N.C. (Nov. 7, 2012) -- The 406th Army Field Support Brigade has deployed personnel and equipment to support relief operations for Superstorm Sandy.
As Army Sustainment Command's main effort, the 406th AFSB stood up Task Force Steadfast Support at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and Fort Hamilton, N.Y.
Lt. Col. Stephen Brock, commander, Army Field Support Battalion-Campbell, and Lt. Col. Paul Royle, commander, AFSBn-Drum, assumed mission command of Army Materiel Command/Army Sustainment Command's, or AMC/ASC's, capabilities deployed to the storm-ravaged region, at the aforementioned installations.
Brock, as Task Force Steadfast Support officer-in-charge, serves as ASC's liaison with Joint Force Land Component Command Coordination Element, 167th Theater Support Command, Forces Command, Defense Coordinating Officers, and Army North in the joint area of operations.
To date, Task Force Steadfast Support has coordinated the shipment of eight UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and two CH-47 Chinook helicopters from Fort Drum, N.Y., to the area of operations to conduct search and rescue missions, and transported personnel and equipment to support first responders.
It also removed 41,000 gallons of JP-8 -- a kerosene-based fuel -- within 24 hours to ready 60 tactical fuelers to dispense 60,000 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel for three days, and coordinated with the Defense Logistics Agency to procure fuel nozzles to enable commercial fuel operations.
The procurement was necessary because the military nozzles do not fit into a commercial vehicle gas tank port. Thus, the nozzles used to support tactical vehicles had to be removed and replaced with a nozzle that fit.
ASC's Directorates of Logistics at Fort Dix, N.J., Fort Drum, N.Y., and Fort Hamilton, N.Y., part of the Task Force Steadfast Support, continue to provide installation sustainment support for deploying units in the area of operations, as well as supporting unit movements.
While the priority of effort has been Task Force Steadfast Support, the entire 406th AFSB, its battalions at Fort Bragg, N.C., and Fort Stewart, Ga., and Departments of Logistics at Fort Bragg, Fort Lee, Va., Fort Gordon, Ga., and the Army Support Activity at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., have been supporting Superstorm Sandy Relief efforts as units in the area receive orders and brigade logistics support teams prepare for deployment.
As of Nov. 6, eight military, three civilians, and one contractor have deployed in support of operations. Other personnel are en route but won't be counted until they arrive.
